Tower of Strength

One of this week’s most interesting apartment listings is the long-held city residence of former grocery magnate John David and his wife, Patti.

For sale by expressions of interest at more than $9 million through Ken Jacobs of Christie’s in conjunction with Vanguarde Estate Agents, the 580-square-metre apartment is on the 26th level of Observatory Tower, a landmark residential high-rise in Kent Street at the southern end of the Harbour Bridge.

With luxuriously appointed interiors by leading designer Thomas Hamel, the vast apartment has three bedrooms, four marble bathrooms and grand formal living and dining areas with direct access to an enormous entertainment terrace with panoramic harbour views.

David has owned the apartment since 1996 when he bought it off the plan for $3,065,000 from the developer, Denis O’Neil, who (with business partners) converted the former office tower to apartments.

At the same time, David also purchased three car spaces for $70,000. The 143-metre-tall Observatory Tower building has 198 residential apartments and first-class facilities including an 18-metre indoor pool, a gym, library, and 24-hour concierge service.
